Hear4U Celebrates 9 Years in Leicester and 11 in Hinckley!
We are thrilled to share that Hear4U celebrates two significant milestones this week. On July 30th, we marked the 9th anniversary of our Leicester clinic.
All devices and technologies have gone through drastic changes in recent years, and this is no less true of the battery technology in hearing aids. As devices have become smaller, the size of the battery has had to change as well – while still improving upon capacity and discharge time.
Consider mobile phones: they’ve become more high-tech, yet slimmer and lighter too. New inventions such as Bluetooth wireless have all been added, leading to increased demands upon battery life. The same is true for hearing aids.
With modern devices, two battery forms are used: rechargeable and non-rechargeable. Until around 2017, rechargeable batteries struggled with all of the extra features that are now standard across our hearing aid range, from wireless function to audio streaming to phone calls.
Thankfully, the invention of lithium-ion batteries has revolutionized rechargeables to last longer than ever before, and they are suitable for (almost) all the top-of-the-range hearing aids!
Not at the moment, no: however, technology is always improving. Some hearing aids require that extra bit of battery power provided by disposable batteries. This is especially true for people with severe to profound hearing loss.
In future, audiologists predict that around 90% of hearing aids will become rechargeable: however, they may never reach 100% due to the requirements of those of us with severe to profound hearing loss.
Put simply, it’s great to be able to just charge your batteries at home after a long day without worrying about when they’ll run out!
Although rechargeable devices cost more up front, their price is easily recouped as you never have to buy extra batteries.
Thanks to their handy charger packs which can easily fit in the palm of your hand, you can take your rechargeables wherever you go, hassle-free.
Because rechargeable hearing aids do not require a battery compartment built-in to the actual aid, they tend to be far smaller and thus far more discreet.
Although gains in rechargeable tech have risen dramatically in recent years, for now the way disposable batteries work (via chemical reaction with oxygen) produces far more power.
Hearing aids with disposable batteries are often cheaper than their rechargeable counterparts in terms of initial cost. However, over time, this will equalize depending on your level of hearing loss and general usage.
You’re able to replace batteries on-the-go without relying upon a daily charge, which can be useful in certain situations where you don’t have access to a mains plug.

When push comes to shove, it’s about what’s best for you and your hearing loss. If you have mild to moderate hearing loss, then rechargeables are a great option if you prefer not to carry around batteries. If your hearing loss is more severe, then it may be necessary to use battery-powered hearing aids due to the extra power. Either way, it’s always best to consult with your audiologist before making a decision.
Many of our top brands now offer rechargeable hearing aids, and picking the one that’s right for you can be a tough choice. Some will offer greater functionality than others; some will offer a better charge. Talk to your audiologist to discuss what you prioritize the most.
All rechargeable hearing aids will come with a charging case as standard. However, other more advanced chargers (including those with dryers built-in) are sold seperately. You can check out a full range here.
The charge will depend on the brand on model, but your typical rechargeable hearing aid will last between 19 and 30 hours.
Again, recharge time will depend heavily on the brand and model of your hearing aids and the strength of your charger case, but in most instances your hearing aids will recharge in 3-4 hours.
