Hearing Aid Technology

Hearing aid technology mostly comes in four different levels, what we can call , basic, standard, advanced and premium. Each level of hearing device technology will deliver different and varying benefits in different sound situations.

Basic technology hearing aids

Each manufacturer has a basic level of technology, they may not call it exactly that though. This level of technology is for people who are relatively sedentary. This may be the basic level from that manufacturer but it will still be on the latest chipset available. Basic level hearing aids are usually quite basic, they will have some features designed to help you hear in noise, but they will be both basic and manually controlled.

Lifestyle help from basic hearing aid technology

You can expect basic technology to help you in quieter sound situations. One to one conversations, even if the person is talking to you from another room is a given. You can also expect them to help you with small groups in quieter situations. They should also help you with TV and Radio. Well programmed basic hearing aids will help you some in limited noise.

Standard technology hearing aids

Each manufacturer has a standard level of technology which is second from the bottom. These devices are for people who are a little more active. The features in these hearing aids will be slightly better than the basic features. They should help you hear in slightly more challenging sound situations. This level of technology is designed for someone who is more active in their life.

Lifestyle help from standard hearing aid technology

You can expect all of the help that a basic hearing aid would deliver but better, on top of that you can expect help a little more challenging sound environments. Such as in group situations, small meetings, out and about at the shops and in restaurants. This help is based on the noise levels present, this level isn't going to help you to hear well in a lot of noise, think moderate levels of background noise in most situations.

Advanced technology hearing aids

This level of technology is really good for more active people, it will have good sound quality and speech clarity in most situations. It seems that most of the manufacturers are keeping a lot of their top end technology features in the advanced ranges. They are dumbing them down slightly, but not a great deal. There are clear differences between these devices and premium devices and there are good reasons why you might choose the higher end technology but these devices are fantastic.

Lifestyle help from advanced hearing aid technology

You can expect all of the help you get from the two previous levels of hearing technology. Advanced hearing aid technology can be expected to assist you in more complex sound situations. Usually at this level you can expect help in situations like large auditoriums or churches. You should be able to hear quite well at the theatre and music should sound pretty good. In general, understanding of speech in noisier situations should be pretty good.

Premium level hearing aids

This technology level is where the hearing aid manufacturers deliver all of their very latest features. If you simply have to hear well in almost every situation, these devices are probably the right ones for you. They are designed to deliver the best speech clarity and most natural sound in nearly every sound situation. This level of hearing aids will truly work as a pair, deciding on how they will work to give you very best hearing.

Lifestyle help from premium hearing aids

Everything that the rest can do but exceptionally better. Premium hearing aid technology is designed to deliver the very best possible hearing and speech clarity available. These level of technology is for active people who need to hear well everywhere.

Hearing Aid Types Available in Leicester

Rechargeable Hearing Aids

In the recent past rechargeable hearing aids have made a comeback, while rechargeable hearing aids have been around for a long time, they were never really fit for purpose. The battery more often than not would run out before you got a full day's use. However, modern rechargeable systems deliver a full day's use and more. In fact, some of the systems will give up to thirty-six hours of use before they need to recharge.

Types of Rechargeable Hearing Aids

There are two types of rechargeable hearing aid technologies, silver-zinc powered and lithium-ion powered. They both have their pros and cons and they both offer similar performance. Many of the hearing aid brands went with silver-zinc power because the technology was readily available and could be added on to their hearing aids. Other manufacturers went for lithium-ion and designed their systems from scratch. It seems though that most of the hearing aid brands are now favouring lithium-ion and we expect to see many more of these devices in the future.

Custom In The Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids

There is a huge range of hearing aids available to us from many different manufacturers. However, they can be broken down into a few types. Each hearing aid type has its own strengths and weaknesses and differs in suitability for different people. We want to explore the different types, discuss suitability and the pros and cons of each one. We would like to start with custom hearing aids or as they are known in the profession in the ear hearing aids (ITEs). They come in many shapes and sizes, from quite visible Full Shell hearing aids to the so-called hidden hearing aids, the Invisible In Canal or IICs.

ITE, CIC, IIC Hearing Aids

Custom hearing aids have been available for a very long time and they come in many shapes and sizes that provide different levels of power and function. Even with the introduction of new types of hearing aids, ITEs remain a popular choice for many customers.

The introduction of the new Invisible hearing aids several years ago has only seen their popularity increase. Some of the hearing aid manufacturers have small custom hearing aids that are wireless. Some hearing aid manufacturers have also been able to fit directional microphones for the first time on CICs (Completely in Canal).

This has increased their benefits for people who need more help in tougher environments but want a very discreet package. Many of the manufacturers now offer small completely in canal devices that are wireless enabled.

Custom Hearing Aid TYpes

Invisible Hearing Aids

Hidden hearing aids or so-called invisible hearing aids have become very popular in the last five years. The manufacturers solved the issues that made it difficult to make really invisible digital hearing aids. Since then nearly every hearing aid brand has introduced an invisible in the canal hearing aid range. IICs fit deeply in the ear making them invisible to the naked eye. IIC hearing aids are too small to be wireless.

You should consider this carefully, wireless accessories bring real benefit for people with hearing loss. More importantly, wireless communication between hearing aids brings huge benefits for users. Invisible hearing aids may not be suitable for you, if your ear canal is not the right shape or size, IICs just won't fit.

Completely In Canal Hearing Aids / Mini In Canal

Completely in canal or CIC hearing aids are small hearing aids that will normally go unnoticed. Many hearing aid brands have released wireless enabled CICs. Wireless CICs are slightly bigger than non-wireless CICs but they will deliver a better experience. Some manufacturers have managed to fit directional microphones on CICs recently.

Directional microphones are a proven feature to help people with hearing loss in noisy environments. This is the first time they have been on CICs. As with the wireless capability, directional mics make the CIC slightly larger. The extra help for you is well worth the trade-off. Mini in canal hearing aids or MICs are everything that a CIC is except slightly larger, most mini in canals would automatically come with wireless functionality and directional microphones.

Full Shell & Half Shell Hearing Aids

These devices are the largest custom hearing aids with the bulk of the case sitting in the bowl of the ear. The half-shell covers half of the bowl and the full shell fills the whole bowl. In the past, these devices had more features, more power and physical controls like programme button and volume controls. However, with the introduction of wireless capability and more powerful features for the smaller devices, those benefits almost null and void. However, they still have advantages, they use bigger batteries which allows them to work longer and they are easier to handle. For people with dexterity or vision issues, these types of hearing aids can be ideal.

The Pros & Cons of Custom Hearing Aids

There definitely advantages and disadvantages to custom hearing aids. Let's take a deeper look at what they are.

Advantages Of Custom Hearing Devices

Discrete Choice

They are a discreet choice, but we would argue that RIC (Receiver In Canal) devices are almost as discreet. The invisible hearing aids are now in fact, invisible. The larger full shell and half shell devices are of course not as discreet.

Easy To Handle

Because the hearing aid is all in one unit, they can be easy to handle and to put in your ear especially the larger devices.

Disadvantages of Custom Hearing Devices

Receiver Issues, Microphone Issues

Like RIC / RITE devices, the receiver (speaker) is located in the ear which can cause problems. The receiver is well protected, much more so than the receivers in RICs. However, being in the ear canal exposes the electronic components including the microphones to wax and sweat.

The manufacturers try to protect all of the components, however, for them to continue to work well, you will need to take good care of your hearing aids with a maintenance schedule.  This involves brushing the wax off the receiver end, changing your wax guards when needed and cleaning the microphones.

It is very rare for anything other than the microphone or receiver to fail. An important consideration here is that custom hearing aids will have to be sent off for repair which can take a varying amount of time. It is rare that any needed repair can be done in the Practice. If the failure is within warranty it will be repaired free of charge, if not, you will have to pay a fee. If you are having them repaired regularly, the cost adds up.

Cleaning & care is a must

A good clean and care routine that involves a drying process is will help to keep your custom hearing aids working. We don't want to put you off this device type, they are great devices and many people get on exceptionally well with them.

If you would like this type of device, you need to be aware of the inherent issues. Many hearing healthcare professionals can arrange a five-year manufacturer's warranty to cover repairs. Some may charge, we actually offer it for free. If you are considering buying custom hearing aids, ask about an extended manufacturers warranty.

They Might Be Too Small!

Some custom hearing aids are very small and they use small batteries. The size of the hearing aid and the size of the battery may cause problems for people with dexterity or vision issues. The larger custom devices are easier to handle and use larger batteries that are also easier to handle.

Contra-indications To Wearing Custom Hearing Aids

There are some people who shouldn't wear these type of devices. For instance, you shouldn't wear custom if you have permanent perforations in your ears or you have had a mastoid operation. The same can be said for people who suffer from sweaty ears or produce excess earwax. Both of these may well cause a failure in custom hearing aids. Lastly, they might not be powerful enough for your hearing loss.
